The Protective Power of Jet: A Comforting Companion for Children with Nightmares
Over the years, many parents have brought their children into my office because they were frightened by recurring nightmares. Some children wake up crying, convinced that ghosts, monsters, or other frightening beings are in their room. Others become afraid to go to sleep altogether. As a practitioner of energy medicine, I have found that sometimes what children need most is a sense of safety, comfort, and reassurance.
One of the tools I occasionally recommend is a piece of the mineral Jet.
Jet, sometimes called “Black Amber,” is not actually a mineral but fossilized ancient wood that has transformed over millions of years. Throughout history, Jet has been valued by many cultures as a protective stone. It has been used in amulets, prayer beads, and jewelry and has long been associated with grounding, emotional balance, and protection from negative influences.
In Daoist energy practices, black stones are often associated with the Water Element and the Kidney system, which governs fear and courage. Jet is believed to help anchor the energy, calm emotional turbulence, and support a sense of stability and security.
When a child is experiencing nightmares, I may give them a small piece of Jet to place under their pillow or on their nightstand. Does the stone magically stop bad dreams? That is not the point. What I have observed is that the stone often becomes a symbol of protection and confidence.
Much like a favorite teddy bear, blanket, or cherished toy, the Jet stone reminds the child that they are safe. It gives them something tangible to focus on when fear arises. Many children report sleeping more peacefully, feeling calmer, and waking less often during the night.
Whether you view Jet through the lens of energy medicine, ancient tradition, psychology, or simple comfort, its value may lie in the sense of security it provides. When children believe they are protected, they often discover that they are stronger and braver than they realized.
Nightmares can be unsettling, but they do not have to control a child’s life. Sometimes healing begins with a small stone, a reassuring conversation, and the knowledge that they are safe, loved, and protected.
It also works well for adults, but they usually need a little more help. I suggest wearing a padded night mask and make sure if it’s a male to have loose underwear nothing restricting and you will sleep better.
